About Al Andalus

The Al Andalus is Spain's legendary Belle Époque luxury train, carrying up to 64 guests through the sun-drenched cities of Andalusia and Castilla aboard original 1929 Wagon-Lits carriages lovingly restored to their golden-age grandeur. Over seven days and six nights, passengers step between a moving palace and a succession of UNESCO World Heritage cities — Córdoba, Toledo, Cáceres, Mérida, and Seville among them — while savoring fine regional cuisine, equestrian spectacles, and sherry bodegas. Whether you travel south from Madrid or north from Seville, the Al Andalus offers one of Europe's most romantic and culturally rich rail journeys.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Al Andalus and where does it travel?+
The Al Andalus is a luxury sleeper train operated by RENFE Viajeros, running through southern and central Spain — the historic heartland of Andalusia and Castilla. Built around original Wagon-Lits carriages from 1929 and 1930, the train has been meticulously restored to its Belle Époque splendour and calls at some of Spain's most celebrated cities, including Seville, Córdoba, Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, Cáceres, Mérida, Toledo and Madrid.
What itineraries are available and how long is the journey?+
The Al Andalus operates two complementary seven-day, six-night itineraries: Seville to Madrid, travelling northward through Andalusia and Castilla via Córdoba, Cádiz, Jerez, Zafra, Cáceres, Mérida, Alcázar de San Juan, Campo de Criptana, Toledo and Aranjuez; and the reverse Madrid to Seville route, covering the same remarkable destinations in the southbound direction. Both journeys depart on Sundays and conclude on Saturdays, offering an immersive week of slow travel.
How much does the Al Andalus cost?+
Fares start from €6,600 per person in a Grand Class Room Suite (double occupancy), rising to from €7,900 per person in a Deluxe Suite (double occupancy); single supplements are also available. Final prices vary by cabin category, season and party size — contact Palace Trains to confirm current availability and pricing: call toll-free 1-800-724-5120, internationally/WhatsApp +1-786-408-0610, or email travel@palacetours.com.
What types of accommodation are available on board?+
Al Andalus has seven beautifully renovated sleeper carriages with two suite categories. The Deluxe Suite (approx. 9.9 m² / 107 sq ft) features a double bed (150 × 200 cm), mini-bar, safe, closet and a full en-suite bathroom with shaving points and hairdryer; there are 20 such suites in total. The Grand Class Room Suite (approx. 8 m² / 86 sq ft) offers two lower beds, a safe, closet and a large en-suite bathroom; 12 suites in total. During the day, beds fold into comfortable couches so each suite becomes a private lounge, and train stewards are available at all times.
What is included in the Al Andalus fare?+
The Al Andalus is a fully escorted luxury train experience, and most fares include on-board dining (breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the beautifully restored restaurant carriages), guided excursions at each destination, and the services of a dedicated on-board train manager throughout the journey. Specific inclusions — such as particular meals taken off-train, drinks packages and excursion admissions — can vary by departure, so we recommend confirming exactly what is covered for your chosen journey with Palace Trains.
When does the Al Andalus operate and how many departures are there?+
The Al Andalus runs in spring, early summer and autumn, with departures typically offered in April, May, June, July, September and October — avoiding the intense heat of midsummer. There are currently 25 upcoming departures available; both the Seville–Madrid and Madrid–Seville itineraries run roughly fortnightly throughout the season. To see the full departure calendar or to check specific dates, visit the Al Andalus page on the Palace Trains website or contact us directly.
Who operates the Al Andalus and what makes it special?+
The Al Andalus is operated by RENFE Viajeros, Spain's national rail operator, and is widely regarded as Spain's answer to the Orient-Express. What sets it apart is the authenticity of its rolling stock — the lounge, bar and restaurant carriages were built in France between 1928 and 1930 by the Wagon-Lits Company and have been restored to their original grandeur — combined with an intimate capacity of just 64 guests, a dedicated on-board manager, and an itinerary that weaves together five UNESCO World Heritage cities, Andalusian equestrian culture, sherry bodegas, artisan cheese producers and fine regional cuisine.

Which UNESCO World Heritage sites does the journey visit?+
The Al Andalus is one of the few journeys in the world to link five UNESCO World Heritage cities in a single trip: Córdoba (the Mezquita-Cathedral and historic centre), Cáceres (its medieval old town), Mérida (the remarkable Roman archaeological ensemble of ancient Lusitania), Toledo (the former Imperial capital with its extraordinary Christian, Muslim and Jewish heritage), and Aranjuez (the Royal Palace and its gardens). The historic quarter of Seville — the journey's starting or finishing point — is also a UNESCO site, making the cultural depth of this itinerary genuinely unrivalled.
Can the Al Andalus be chartered for private events?+
Yes — the Al Andalus is available for private charter, making it an exceptional choice for corporate incentives, conferences, product launches or film locations. With its intimate capacity, exquisite period interiors and exclusive Andalusian itinerary, a chartered journey offers a truly unforgettable backdrop.
