Costa Verde Express

Through the lush landscapes of northern Spain aboard a 1920s Pullman train hotel

About the Train

Costa Verde Express saloons are treasures of railway heritage, several of them original 1923 Pullman cars, all lovingly renovated and decorated for luxury travel. The journey connects two of Spain's most captivating cities — Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela — passing through a coastal world of medieval villages, Asturian mountains, Cantabrian seascapes, and rich regional culture.

Whether travelling east to west or west to east, passengers experience the same curated itinerary of art, gastronomy, and natural beauty from the comfort of a moving hotel. This is northern Spain at its most unhurried — a part of Europe that rewards those who take time to discover it.

Accommodation

Costa Verde Express Suite

Each of the 23 suites measures 6 sq.m. and features a double bed — 1.35 m wide by 1.85 m long — that converts to a sofa during the day. Large curtained windows, luggage space, mini-bar, safe, wardrobe, writing desk, telephone, and fitted carpet are standard. Guests enjoy individual control of air-conditioning, heating, music, and lighting, plus a private bathroom with hydro-sauna turbo-massage steam shower and hair dryer.

Saloon Cars

The train's saloon cars date from the 1920s and evoke a more gracious era of travel. The elegant Dining Car offers à la carte and buffet breakfasts each morning, as well as chef-prepared lunches and dinners. The Bar Car is open throughout the journey — the perfect place to watch the Cantabrian landscape roll past with a drink in hand.

Further carriages include the Tea Saloon, Panorama Coach, and Entertainment Saloon — a small onboard nightclub with live entertainment each evening. A library stocked with newspapers and magazines, plus DVDs and television, are also available.

Questions About the Costa Verde Express

How many suites does the Costa Verde Express have, and how private is onboard life?+
The train carries just 23 suites, each 6 square metres with a double bed (1.35m by 1.85m) that converts to a sofa by day, giving the whole train an intimate, small-hotel feel rather than a crowded carriage atmosphere. Each suite has its own private bathroom with a hydro-sauna turbo-massage steam shower, individual climate and lighting controls, a mini-bar, safe, and writing desk. With so few suites aboard, service is highly personalized — our guests often comment that staff know their names and preferences within the first day.

How far in advance should I book a Costa Verde Express departure?+
With only 23 suites per departure and a limited annual schedule, this is one of the more exclusive itineraries in northern Spain, so we recommend booking as early as possible once your travel dates are set. Departure dates and current pricing are confirmed at the time of booking rather than fixed year-round. Contact Palace Trains toll-free at 1-800-724-5120 or travel@palacetours.com to check live availability for your preferred dates.

What kind of excursions happen at the stops along the way, beyond just riding the train?+
Excursions are woven into the itinerary at key points along the route, taking guests off the train to explore the medieval villages, coastal towns, and cultural sites of Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia before returning to the comfort of the suite and Dining Car. These guided outings are what turn the journey from a scenic ride into a genuine regional immersion — local history, architecture, and gastronomy experienced on the ground, not just from the window. Because specific excursion stops can vary by departure, our team will confirm the exact program when you book.
