The single most common question we field at Palace Trains is not "which train" but "when." A luxury train journey is really a moving window onto a landscape, and the wrong month can mean monsoon rain against the glass in Rajasthan or a scorched, dust-hazed Outback instead of a golden one. Through the journeys we arrange each year, we have learned that timing is as much a part of trip design as choosing a cabin category.
This guide walks region by region through the year, so you can match your travel dates to the season each train was built for. Where a departure calendar or fare varies, we point you to the relevant train page rather than quote a date that may have shifted by the time you read this.
India: October to April
India's luxury trains are seasonal by necessity. The Maharajas' Express, Deccan Odyssey, and Palace on Wheels all run their itineraries between October and April, when daytime temperatures across Delhi, Jaipur, and Udaipur settle into the pleasant mid-20s Celsius rather than the 45C+ heat of a Rajasthani May. December and January bring the coolest, clearest mornings — ideal for sunrise at Ranthambore or the ghats of Agra — while some guests prefer late February and March, when the desert forts of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur are warm by day but still comfortable at night. Our guests most often ask us to avoid the pre-monsoon build-up in April, when haze can dull the views. Full route calendars live on each train's journal page.
Spain: Spring and Autumn
Spain's grand trains — Al Andalus, El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, Costa Verde Express, and El Expreso de la Robla — are built for two very different climates within one country. Southern routes through Seville, Córdoba, and Granada are best in April, May, September, and October, when the Andalusian sun is generous without being punishing and the orange-blossom season or grape harvest adds atmosphere. The northern Camino routes along the Cantabrian coast, through Bilbao, León, and Santiago de Compostela, run cooler and greener, so late spring through early autumn suits them well, with June and September offering the mildest seas along the Bay of Biscay coastline.
Australia: The Dry Season Advantage
For The Ghan, running between Darwin and Adelaide via Alice Springs, the Top End's dry season from May to October is the clear window — the Wet Season's humidity and flooding make the shoulder months far more comfortable. The Indian Pacific, crossing from Sydney to Perth, is more forgiving year-round since it traverses temperate zones, though Australian spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) avoid both summer heat across the Nullarbor and winter chill in the east.
Southern Africa: Winter Is High Season
Counter-intuitively, the best months for the Pride of Africa on Rovos Rail and the classic Blue Train are the Southern Hemisphere winter — May through September. Skies over Pretoria, Cape Town, and Victoria Falls are driest and clearest then, and game viewing along the route is at its best as vegetation thins and animals gather at water sources. Water levels at Victoria Falls itself are actually most dramatic just after the wet season, from March to May, so travelers prioritizing the falls sometimes bracket their booking around that transition — worth discussing when you enquire on the Pride of Africa journal.
Peru: The Dry Andes
Both the Hiram Bingham and Andean Explorer favor the Andean dry season, May to October, when trails to Machu Picchu are clear and skies over Cusco, Puno, and Arequipa stay bright for the high-altitude scenery the routes are known for. June through August is peak, coinciding with the Southern Hemisphere winter, which at this altitude means crisp, sunny days and cold nights rather than snow.
Europe: Late Spring Through Early Autumn
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, British Pullman, Royal Scotsman, Britannic Explorer, Orient Express La Dolce Vita, and Danube Express Golden Eagle all run their principal seasons from April into October, with June and September standing out as favorites among our guests — warm enough for evenings on the observation platform through Venice, Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and the Scottish Highlands around Inverness and the Isle of Skye, without the July–August crowds at stops like Florence and Rome. Italy's La Dolce Vita routes through Matera, Palermo, and Taormina are particularly striking in the soft light of late spring and early autumn.
Asia: Cool, Dry Windows
Southeast Asia's Eastern & Oriental Express and SJourney Vietnam Luxury Express are best scheduled for the cool, dry season roughly November to February, avoiding both the monsoon and the most intense tropical heat across Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Hanoi. In Japan, Seven Stars in Kyushu rewards travel in spring for cherry blossoms or autumn for foliage around Fukuoka, though its small capacity means booking well ahead matters more than chasing a specific week.
How to Use This Guide
Seasonal patterns are only the starting point — actual departure dates, fares, and itinerary variations are set by each operator and change from year to year. Once you know your ideal window, the fastest way to confirm availability is to check the specific departures calendar for your train or speak with our team via contact. We are also happy to compare regions if you are choosing between, say, an Andean spring and a Scottish summer. Browse the full roster on our trains page or explore destinations to see which season lines up best with the landscapes you want most.
